An aviation manual lathe machinist with tool-making skills is a highly skilled artisan responsible for fabricating, repairing, and modifying precision aircraft components and specialized tooling using traditional, hand-operated lathes and other machine tools. The role requires exceptional precision to meet the strict standards and tight tolerances of aerospace engineering. The machinist interprets complex engineering drawings, selects appropriate materials and tooling, performs precision measurements, fabricates and maintains specialized fixtures, troubleshoots machining issues, and collaborates with engineers and quality personnel to optimize processes while adhering to safety and quality standards.

* High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
* A minimum of several years of experience operating manual lathes, mills, and other machine tools, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Knowledge of metallurgy, mechanical principles, and shop mathematics.
* Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
* Precision measuring experience using calipers, micrometers, and gauges. Preferred Skills
* Experience in tool and fixture design, fabrication, and maintenance.
* Cross-training in complementary machining processes and materials.
* Experience in aerospace or aviation component manufacturing. Job Duties & Functions
* Set up and operate manual lathes, mills, grinders, and other machine tools to produce high-precision parts.
* Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and technical data to determine machining operations and tolerances.
* Use precision measuring instruments to inspect and verify part dimensions and ensure conformance to specifications.
* Design, fabricate, modify, and maintain specialized tooling, jigs, and fixtures.
* Select appropriate materials, cutting tools, and machine parameters for each job.
* Diagnose and resolve machining problems, adjusting operations as required.
* Perform routine equipment maintenance and cleaning while following safety and quality protocols.
* Collaborate with engineers, quality control personnel, and other machinists to optimize processes. Physical Requirements & Environment
* Manual dexterity and coordination to operate hand controls and tools precisely.
* Ability to work with extremely tight tolerances and perform detailed inspections.
