SUMMARY:
We are seeking an experienced Ambulance Coding Specialist to join our team. This role is responsible for accurate assignment of ambulance service codes based on clinical documentation and applicable regulatory guidelines. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of CMS ambulance coding requirements and ensures compliance with all federal, state, and payer-specific regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned.)
Review and interpret PCRs and supporting documentation to ensure accurate coding
Determine the correct level of ambulance service (ALS/BLS/SCT, etc.)
Assign appropriate ICD-10 diagnosis codes in proper sequencing
Assign correct HCPCS codes and required ambulance modifiers
Ensure compliance with CMS, Medicare, Medicaid, and payer-specific coding guidelines
Identify documentation deficiencies and communication issues as needed
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of ambulance coding regulations and industry changes
Ensure accuracy and completeness of coded records prior to claim submission
Apply critical thinking and attention to detail to coding decisions
Maintain productivity and accuracy standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR HIRE:
Minimum of 3 years of ambulance or medical coding experience (ambulance-specific preferred)
Strong working knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid ambulance coding guidelines
Working knowledge of ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and ambulance modifiers
Understanding of HIPAA and compliance requirements
Ability to read and interpret clinical documentation accurately
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Effective written and verbal communication skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR HIRE:
Associate or bachelors degree
Ambulance Billing experience
Ambulance Certified Coder
Bilingual
Certified ICD-10 coding: 3-year (Preferred)
REPORTS TO: Director of Patient Financial Services
CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt
