Position Summary:
Serves as in-house labor and employment counsel for the Company.
Scope/Supervision and Interaction:
Has Direct Reports X Does Not Have Direct Reports
Works with other department attorneys and staff, and with various HR leaders and Corporate and Group management.
Responsibilities & Essential Functions:
- Provide legal counsel to HR leaders and other managers for assigned sectors of the Company in all areas of labor and employment law for compliance and for managing all aspects of the employment relationship
- Advise on HR-related investigations and review reports to provide recommendations
- Negotiate resolution of employment disputes pre-litigation
- Draft, review and edit documents and agreements for employee matters (e.g., severance, transition or retention agreements; and disciplinary or performance-related communications)
- Manage employment-related litigation and responses to government agency charges / claims
- Conduct periodic legal trainings and host legal update sessions as needed or established cadences.
- Monitor legislative developments and timely communicate key updates to HR stakeholders
- Advise HR as needed in developing practical processes and procedures to enable execution and compliance with laws and policies
- Establish or improve resources to support HR compliance (e.g., flowcharts, checklists, cheat-sheets, templates, standard forms)
- Create and/or update employment-related policies
- Update handbooks
- Identify compliance or legal concerns and facilitate or support resolutions
- Represent Legal as proficient in areas of responsibility.
- Support Legal Department’s strategic planning and deployment initiatives, procedures and policies (including annual improvement priorities (AIPs) and metric performance) in areas of responsibility.
Minimum Qualifications & Essential Skills
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
- Active license to practice law in Ohio.
- 5 years practice in employment law.
- Ability to write efficiently, effectively and concisely
- Ability to find creative & practical approaches to solve and advise on legal concerns
- Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to operate independently with minimal supervision
- Collaborative with others, able to work as part of a team to accomplish goals.
