An Aerospace Bench Fitter is primarily responsible for the precision assembly, detailing, and maintenance of aircraft components and mechanical systems, working in compliance with strict quality and safety standards. The job involves a blend of manual dexterity and technical knowledge, interpreting engineering drawings, and using a variety of tools.


Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Daily duties for an aerospace bench fitter often include:

Assembly and Fitting: Assembling, installing, and aligning aircraft mechanical parts and components according to detailed engineering specifications. This can include engines, flight controls, landing gear, and hydraulic systems.

Precision Finishing: Performing precision detailing, deburring, and finishing operations on machined components using hand tools, polishing equipment, and rotary tools.

Inspection and Testing: Inspecting components for wear or damage (visually and dimensionally using gauges/micrometers), and functionally testing completed units to ensure compliance with aviation standards.

Documentation and Compliance: Accurately completing all required documentation, such as maintenance records and work cards, and adhering strictly to health & safety and quality assurance procedures.

Problem Solving: Diagnosing complex mechanical faults and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to implement effective solutions.

Workshop Maintenance: Maintaining high standards of housekeeping and tool control, and operating various lifting equipment safely.


Qualifications

You must have:

Successful candidates typically possess a combination of technical skills and personal attributes:

Technical Knowledge: A strong understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, and pneumatics. Basic knowledge of welding, fabrication, and machining operations (turning/milling) can be advantageous.

Qualifications: An engineering qualification or a recognized aerospace apprenticeship (NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent) is often required.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years experience in precision fitting, detailing, or assembly within aerospace, automotive, or precision manufacturing sectors.

Manual Dexterity: Excellent hand-eye coordination and the ability to perform intricate manual operations, often under magnification.

Blueprint Reading: The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and manufacturers instructions to determine repair specifications.
