Role: Senior Data Scientist - Operational Research 

As a Senior Data Scientist at British Airways, you will play a pivotal role in developing data-driven models to enhance decision-making processes across Integrated Operations. Your responsibility lies in ensuring the accuracy and effectiveness of these models across digital tools, core systems, and data platforms. By leveraging advanced analytics, operational research techniques, and data science methodologies, you will contribute to the improvement of our business plan delivery and overall decision-making quality.

Scope:

  • Develop and deliver analysis, insights, and models to address key business issues and improve decision-making effectiveness, with a strong emphasis on operational research methodologies.
  • Employ a structured approach to tackle complex business problems, integrating operational research techniques into mathematical models and data products to provide business insights and decision support.
  • Implement predictive and prescriptive algorithms at scale, leveraging operational research principles to optimise processes and resources.
  • Create new metrics, reports, and dashboards using historical and real-time data to support business decision-making processes, incorporating operational research methodologies for efficient decision support.
  • Become an expert on data within the business area, ensuring data integrity and leveraging it effectively in digital products, with a focus on operational research applications.

Accountabilities:

  • Develop quantitative models and products to address critical business issues, with a strong emphasis on operational research methodologies.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business requirements into mathematical formulations solvable with predictive, prescriptive, and operational research techniques.
  • Implement machine learning and optimisation algorithms in production environments, integrating operational research principles for efficient decision-making.
  • Create new metrics, reports, and dashboards using historical and live data to support decision making, incorporating operational research methodologies for optimal resource allocation.
  • Manage own portfolio of work, adhering to best practices for technology architecture and development processes, with a focus on operational research applications.
  • Communicate technical topics and key insights to both technical and non-technical audiences, emphasising the role of operational research in driving business outcomes.
  • Maintain strong relationships with business stakeholders and users, highlighting the value of operational research in addressing complex business challenges.

What Youll Bring to British Airways:

  • Advanced analytical skills, including the ability to apply a range of data science, analytics, and operational research techniques.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present complex issues and influence business decisions, emphasising the role of operational research in driving business outcomes.
  • Proficiency in Python and other programming languages, as well as experience with SQL queries, with a focus on operational research applications.
  • Numerate degree with a focus on data science, advanced analytics, or operational research, emphasising the application of operational research methodologies.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience in applying analytics or data science skills at scale, with a focus on operational research applications.
  • Deep knowledge of a specific area of the business and understanding of the business plan and key initiatives across British Airways, with a focus on leveraging operational research for business optimisation.
