Job Description:

The Director of Income and Excise Tax leads and develops the Corporate Income and Excise Tax Team and is responsible for ensuring all tax returns and tax accounting accruals are complete, accurate and timely. This role guides the audit strategy and tax planning for the Company and communicates quarterly and annual financial results to the Senior Leadership of the Finance Department in a clear and easily understood manner. The Director Income and Excise is an adaptable problem-solver and skilled communicator who is passionate about building relationships and finding ways to reinvigorate the future of Southwest Airlines.

This role is a hybrid position based out of our Corporate Campus in Dallas, TX, which requires Employees to work onsite on our Corporate Campus at least three days a week. Job Responsibilities
  • Oversee international, federal, state and local income tax filings, tax audits and tax research, including income, franchise, and excise filings
  • Create, communicate, and manage the execution of a strategic Department Vision that aligns with the Controller and Company Visions
  • Act as advisor to other departments or individuals who are seeking information and guidance relating to income tax
  • Monitors tax law and/or accounting pronouncement changes that impact the Company and proactively communicates to Finance Leadership
  • Direct the preparation and review of ASC 740 process (Accounting for Income Taxes) including: full compliance with U.S. GAAP tax disclosures required for the tax footnote included in SEC Form 10-K annual report and Form 10-Q quarterly reports, ensure tax accounts are reconciled, adequate controls exist and the companys SEC filings have appropriate disclosures, ensures that U.S. current and deferred tax account balances are accurately stated and properly classified through annual reconciliation to underlying asset and liability accounts and/or discrete tax bases
  • Evaluate tax savings opportunities to reduce costs; direct implementation
  • Guide development and implementation of new tax planning strategies both domestically and internationally, including the evaluation of effects of current and future changes in tax law
  • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee&39;s Leaders

Education

  • Required: High School Diploma or GED
  • Required: Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Finance

Experience
  • Preferred: Knowledge of federal and state tax laws

  • Preferred: Experience in accounting for income taxes (ASC 740)

  • Preferred: A working knowledge of Thomson OneSource Income Tax, OneSource Tax Provision, and SAP general ledger software platforms

  • Demonstrated experience in directly or indirectly leading team(s)
  • Advanced level Business Acumen in functional area
  • Seasoned and specialized knowledge in:
    • Large corporate tax department practices and/or Big 4 accounting firm practices
    • Corporate income tax function and/or Big 4 accounting firm practices

Licensing/Certification
  • Required: Certified Public Accountant

Physical Abilities
  • Ability to perform work duties from limited space work station/desk/office area for extended periods of time
  • Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
  • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job

Other Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
  • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
  • Must meet confidentiality expectations as to confidential, proprietary, and sensitive Company information
  • Must have the flexibility to work extended hours, including occasional weekends, and Company holidays
  • Some travel may be required

Pay & Benefits
Competitive market salary from $192,350 - 213,700 per year* depending on qualifications and experience. For eligible Leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities are available and awarded at the discretion of the company.
