Job Description
This role supports flight operations as a general mechanic on F18 and other large aircraft, performing depot-level maintenance, repair, overhaul, and modification on airframes, powerplants, and related systems. You will carry out flight line, ramp, and flight operations mechanic duties, including flight control removal, installation, rigging, and functional checks, as well as hydraulic and other component work in accordance with Department of Defense, manufacturer, company, and supplier directives. The position may also include fuel cell work and other Airframe & Powerplant repairs to ensure aircraft are safe, mission-ready, and compliant with all technical and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Perform flight operations general mechanic tasks on F18 and other large aircraft, including flight line, ramp, and flight operations mechanic duties.
- Remove, install, and rig flight controls, ensuring proper setup, alignment, and functional performance.
- Carry out CDI or CDQAR-level inspection activities related to removal, installation, and functional checks of aircraft systems and components, as qualified.
- Perform high and low power turn-qualified operations as required in support of flight operations.
- Remove and install hydraulic components and related systems in accordance with technical data and maintenance procedures.
- Support depot-level disassembly and rebuilds of aircraft, engines, components, and systems.
- Perform maintenance operations on aircraft, aircraft equipment, engines, components, and systems in accordance with DOD, manufacturer, company, supplier, and other applicable directives.
- Conduct Airframe & Powerplant repairs, including potential fuel cell work, following all safety and technical standards.
- Use and maintain ground support equipment to support aircraft maintenance and flight operations.
- Read and interpret schematics, assembly drawings, process specifications, technical manuals, written instructions, and test procedures to perform accurate maintenance and repairs.
- Set up and operate pneumatic tools such as screw guns and other powered equipment safely and effectively.
- Set up and use torque wrenches to tighten fasteners to specified values.
- Use common hand tools, including wrenches and safety wire pliers, to carry out mechanical tasks.
- Remove and replace panels, floorboards, insulation, and sealing compounds using a variety of mechanical fasteners.
- Remove, replace, and check out aircraft components and assemblies, verifying proper operation and configuration.
- Clearly document all maintenance and repair actions, including equipment status tags, logs, and parts requests, in accordance with company and program requirements.
- Communicate effectively in oral and written form with coworkers, supervision, and other stakeholders to coordinate work and resolve issues.
- Order parts, pan stock, tools, materials, and equipment as required to complete assigned duties, following established procedures.
- Comply with all rules and regulations concerning health and safety, tool control, contracts, facilities, and other relevant policies.
- Wear required safety equipment and follow all safety protocols while performing assigned duties.
- Perform assigned duties on any shift and in varying weather or physical conditions without encumbrance.
- Carry out additional tasks and responsibilities as directed by supervision and management in support of the company, program, and team.
Essential Skills
- Proven experience in aircraft maintenance at depot level, including repair and overhaul of airframes, powerplants, and associated systems.
- Hands-on experience working with large aircraft and major components such as airframe and powerplant.
- Ability to perform flight control removal, installation, rigging, and functional checks.
- Experience with hydraulic component removal and installation.
- Capability to support depot-level disassembly and rebuilds of aircraft and components.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, assembly drawings, process specifications, technical manuals, written instructions, and test procedures.
- Proficiency in setting up and using pneumatic tools such as screw guns and similar equipment.
- Proficiency in setting up and using torque wrenches to specified values.
- Skilled in using common hand tools, including wrenches and safety wire pliers.
- Ability to remove and replace panels, floorboards, insulation, and sealing compounds using all types of mechanical fasteners.
- Ability to remove, replace, and check out aircraft components and assemblies accurately.
- Strong oral and written communication skills to interact with coworkers, supervision, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to clearly document maintenance and repair actions, equipment status tags, logs, and parts requests.
- Ability to perform assigned duties while wearing required safety equipment.
- Ability to work all assigned shifts and perform duties in varying weather and physical conditions.
- Commitment to comply with all health and safety, tool control, contract, facility, and related regulations.
- Willingness to perform other duties as directed by supervision and management.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience as a ramp mechanic, flight line mechanic, or flight operations mechanic.
- Familiarity with DOD, manufacturer, company, and supplier directives related to aircraft maintenance and modification.
- Experience performing fuel cell work on aircraft.
- Familiarity with ground support equipment and its use in support of flight operations and maintenance.
- Ability to be turn qualified for high and low power operations, where applicable.
- Inspection experience at CDI or CDQAR level for aircraft systems and components, where qualified.
- Ability to order and manage parts, pan stock, tools, materials, and equipment in support of maintenance activities.

Work Environment
This position is based in a military hangar environment working on large aircraft in an open-bay, non-climate-controlled facility. You will work around active flight operations, ground support equipment, and heavy aircraft components, following strict safety and tool control procedures. The role requires flexibility to work any shift, with primary schedules including 1st shift (Monday–Friday, approximately 5:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.) and 2nd shift (Monday–Friday, approximately 2:00 p.m.–10:30 p.m.). You must be comfortable working in varying temperatures and weather-related conditions within the hangar. Appropriate safety gear is required, and you will be able to expense up to a set annual amount toward steel-toed shoes in line with safety and dress requirements for the facility.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Antonio, TX.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
