Boeing Commercial Airplanes has an exciting opportunity for a Flexible Machining System Operator to join our team in Portland, OR.

Employees in this position setup, operate and adjust numerous types of Numerically Controlled (NC) Flexible Machining Systems (i.e., one or more machines), utilizing pre-planned control media and/or program documents to produce close tolerance, high quality parts using process and quality control systems.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Ensure safe working conditions exist (e.g., machine, tooling, shop area) before beginning, as required.

  • Obtain work from scheduling production systems, as required.

  • Prepare to set-up job (e.g., production orders, first lots, tool tryouts) or run previously set-up job by reviewing work order, NC documents, operator or setup documents, prints, CATIA plots and other digital media.

  • Review Work Order to ensure correct material (e.g., type and quantity) and tools or fixtures were issued and are free from visible defects,as required.

  • Check machine(s) set-up and/or parts and review process steps to determine progress on a job, as required.

  • Identify type of set-up required. Verify fixtures and tooling and select accessories and holding devices for machine(s) (e.g., chucks, vises, turntables, templates). Verify apparatus is in good condition.

  • Attach/adjust machine accessories, tools, and fixtures (e.g., coolant lines, air nozzles, suction devices, etc.), using tools such as dial indicators, probes, gauges, hand tools, overhead cranes and other material handling devices.

  • Upload/download Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) programs and cell controller programs from various databases and servers to operate multiple systems (e.g., flexible machine system (FMS), remote guided vehicle system (RGV)). Troubleshoot minor controller problems, as required.

  • Set-up, identify and define cutting tool characteristics using computerized pre-setting equipment and tool management systems, as required.

  • Select and check cutting tools per program or CNC documents. Ensure cutters are the correct type, length, diameter, radius and are in good condition.

  • Install cutters into various tool holding systems using spindle tapers, hand tools and/or overhead cranes. Set correct cutter gauge length, check and adjust tool runout and balance high speed cutters, as required. Ensure safety procedures are followed during operation.

  • Load and unload cutters into machine tool chain position following program information or set-up documents.

  • Set machine(s) coordinates or index points per CNC documents, including cutter offset/compensations, tool heights, and probes, using controller keyboard, coaxial indicator or digital readout, height blocks and shims.

  • Run CNC programs to rough and finish machine parts following NC documents and other work instructions.

  • Monitor machine(s) for abnormal operations such as unusual vibration, chip build-up, broken tooling, etc.; intervene, as required.

  • Adjust minor machine settings (e.g., coolant) to correct machining problems or to prepare machine for next operation in sequence.

  • Remove all sharp edges for safe handling with de-burring tools, as required.

  • Perform Statistical Process Control (SPC) and data collection functions to develop reliable processes, as required.

  • Handle, use and dispose of hazardous materials (e.g., coolants, solvents) in approved manner per Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), following shop procedures and using personal protective equipment (PPE), as required.

  • Check work after completion of each operation in job and/or completed job to ensure parts are complete per drawing/process and there are no defects (e.g., tool marks, mismatch, incorrect surface finish, etc.). If nonconformance is identified, prepare required nonconformance (i.e. pinky) information and enter into electronic system.

  • Perform machine accuracy and reliability checks (e.g., measuring equipment, calibrations) using probes, indicators and standards. Submit maintenance request, as needed.

  • Perform continuous autonomous maintenance (e.g., lubrication points, air filtration systems, tank/coolant levels, etc.), as required. Submit maintenance request, as needed.

  • Assist NC Programming and Maintenance, as required.

  • Maintain tool and employee certifications, as required.

  • Perform 5S duties, as required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Capable of lifting, pushing and pulling up to 35 pounds.

  • Basic computer skills.

  • Work with others as part of a team which includes working safely giving and receiving feedback, assisting others in completion of tasks; possess interpersonal, listening, and participation skills.

  • 1&43; years experience in operating Manual and CNC machine

  • 1&43; years experience in 5-Axis/3-Axis NC/CNC Milling Machine

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

High School diploma or GED preferred.

Typical Education:

Trade School Diploma in Machining.

Relocation:

This position is located in a location that does not offer relocation.  Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.

Shift:

This position is for 2nd shift.

This position is expected to be 100 onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

Other Relevant Information & Requirements:

This is an hourly position governed by the IAM Collective Bargaining agreement.

Summary pay range: $24.00 - 48.81/hr
