Summary

The Furnace Operator will operate the furnace by safely charging heats, reducing tap to tap times, and calculating and adjusting chemistries to achieve a high-quality product that adheres to customer specifications.

Essential Functions

Follow all safety procedures, including personal protective equipment.

Maintain good housekeeping and a clean work environment.

Reports all accidents, near misses, equipment damage, etc. promptly.

Ability to read, understand and execute Sales Order work instructions.

Working knowledge of the Furnace, including computer control mode and manual control mode.

Ability to understand and demonstrate furnace operation to minimize the tap-to-tap times efficiently.

Ability to calculate dilutions and additions and to “pour of” as required.

Provide instructions and directions to the Furnace Assistant.

Understand and demonstrate proper charging and back charging of materials including potentially wet materials.

Ability to recognize the difference between slag and metal to increase yields.

Capable of safely and effectively operating:

-pendant crane.

-hydraulic oxygen lance.

-refractory gun.

-fork truck.

-cut off saw.

-belt sander.

Perform routine planned furnace maintenance and inspections per department requirements.

Ability to maintain an accurate and legible heat record and other quality records as required.

Performs miscellaneous functions as needed in various departments

Performs all work in accordance with the PCC Code of Conduct.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent.

2-4 years&39; experience in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment required.

Must be qualified as a Furnace Assistant.

Competencies

Experience operating forklifts preferred.

Must have attention for detail, including basic math skills with the ability to add and subtract accurately.

Proficient in the basic use of a computer to facilitate the entry and completion of work orders.

Able to use basic hand tools.

Must physically be able to frequently lift up to 35 lbs. with frequent bending.

Able to multi-task with shifting priorities and multiple interruptions.

Must be willing to work shifts and overtime as needed, including 12-hour shifts.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands – Must be able to frequently reach overhead, bend/stoop, push/pull, twist, stand, walk, perform repetitive hand movements, and lift and/or carry up to 35lbs. Position requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as but not limited to safety glasses with side shields, hearing protection and flame retardant clothing..
