Job Description Summary

Job Description

The Material & Process Modeling team at GE Aerospace Research is looking for students to work with our manufacturing modeling and simulation experts on the development of new materials and manufacturing technologies for aerospace applications.

Our Fellow Interns conduct research in an interdisciplinary team in two major areas:

(1) development of new methods and algorithms in computational geometry with applications in design, manufacturing and metrology, and

(2) development of physics-based models of new advanced materials and their manufacturing processes.

Interns will have the opportunity to write prototype software and integrate with existing internal or commercial software, and design and conduct experiments to calibrate and validate these computational models.

Key to each role:
Computational Geometry Internship

  • Expertise in CAD/CAM for 3-D manufacturing (e.g., additive manufacturing, conventional material removal or deformation, or robotic machining)

  • Inspection planning & analysis for complex 3-D geometry (e.g., optical metrology, CMM, NDT)

  • Programming skills and experience creating algorithms & software to solve technical problems in advanced manufacturing, and experience in computer programming (e.g., Python/C++/C/C)

  • Knowledge of geometric/solid modeling, and familiarity with one or more commercial CAD/CAM systems

Physics-Based Manufacturing Modeling Internship

  • Expertise in the process-microstructure-property relationships and thermo-mechanical behavior of one or more major classes of structural materials (advanced alloys, and/or fiber-reinforced composites)

  • Broad knowledge of material processes (alloy and composite processing, additive manufacturing)

  • Skills and experience in multiphysics modeling and simulation software (e.g., Abaqus, Ansys, Comsol, ...)

At GE Aerospace Research, scientists, engineers, and technicians innovate for the future of flight. An internship with us will provide valuable hands-on experience to help you launch your career in industrial research.  Intern assignments are typically for 12-14 weeks; working side by side with experts in the field of mechanical engineering, completing challenging technical projects and applying theoretical knowledge to real-life technical problems.  This program includes seminars on cross-center technology and soft skills development as well as opportunities for networking and showcasing project accomplishments.

Required Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a full-time Ph.D. degree program in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or related disciplines at an ABET accredited university

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

  • Minimum GPA 3.0 / 4.0 scale

Desired Characteristics

  • Excellent academic performance with technical research orientation

  • Ability to adapt to change and willingness to be flexible in a global team environment

  • Strong interpersonal skills, initiative and organization; demonstrated ability working with a team

  • Strong problem solving skills, thorough attention to detail

The pay range for this position is $1,000-$2,000 USD weekly. The specific weekly rate offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location.  GE provides travel reimbursement and housing stipend for qualified interns.
