PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Grounds Worker/Seasonal maintains grounds of industrial, commercial, or public property such as buildings, common areas, comfort areas, camp and picnic areas, parks, playgrounds, greenhouses, athletic fields and structures and equipment. The Grounds Worker ensures that grounds equipment is in good, safe, and functional working conditions. The Grounds Worker must be able to work and perform duties during adverse weather conditions (heat/cold) and be able to perform on-call duties. The Grounds Worker continues to support the Arsenal mission, proactively solve problems, and deliver quality services safely in the performance of the Rock Island BOS PWS.   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Utilize tools and equipment for grounds maintenance in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Utilize riding mowers and/or walking type to cut grass.

  • Trim hedges, flowerbeds, trim edges of walkways and areas required trimming.

  • Prunes shrubs and trees to shape.

  • Plant grass, flowers, trees and shrubs as necessary to promote beautification.

  • Water lawn and shrubs during dry periods.

  • Spray lawn, shrubs and trees with fertilizer or insecticide.

  • Pick up debris, trash, leaves and litter.

  • Removes snow from walkways, driveways, roads or parking lots and spread snow salt on walkways.

  • Repair and paint fences, gates, benches, tables, outside buildings (as required), guardrails and railings.

  • Assist in repair of walkways, roads, buildings and mechanical equipment.

  • Sweeps parking lots, walkways and pathways as necessary.

  • Assists in cleaning, sweeping and mopping comfort stations, workshop areas, offices and common areas.

  • Works closely and harmoniously with other employees.

  • Must be able to multitask. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Experienced in grounds maintenance and compliance regarding Government contracts.

  • Must be able to work in team or alone under adverse weather conditions (cold/heat).

  • Must be able to perform on-call duties and report to work within one hour of notification.

  • Must have experience customer service and demonstrate a courteous and positive attitude.

  • Ability to identify potential hazards and mitigate them.

  • Ability to work in a diverse environment.

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.  

  • Must have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform requirements for grounds maintenance.

  • Must be an excellent communicator and have fair judgement.  

  • Must be able to work safely, proactively and demonstrate aptitude for successful completion of tasks.

  • Must have practical knowledge of worksite safety, hazards, and quality.

  • Must be able to be organized and multi-tasker.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.

  • Have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

  • Must be qualified to operate a vehicle.

  • Must be able to work alternate shifts to meet mission requirements to include weekends and holidays.  

  • Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Must be able to work on secure military facilities.

  • Must be able to pass a DoD background check, pass drug/alcohol screening tests and criminal record check.
