The Occupational Health Nurse at Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) provides professional services to promote the health and safety of all employees while addressing the organization’s specific health and prevention needs. The clinics focus on occupational medicine.
Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, Health and Wellness Services at P&WC, the nurse works within a multidisciplinary team composed of physicians, nurses, health and safety advisors, human resources advisors, employee representatives, and insurance agents.
In addition to working with Québec employees, the role also requires supporting other pan-Canadian health services entities in order to achieve continuous improvement objectives in health and wellness services.
The Occupational Health Nurse at P&WC is committed to maintaining professional competencies and is responsible for pursuing ongoing professional development relevant to practice.
This is a full-time position from Monday to Friday with flexible hours, based in Longueuil, and performed exclusively on-site.
What will your day-to-day look like?
- Assist employees and various stakeholders in the complete management of occupational illnesses and workplace injuries in accordance with applicable standards, best practice principles, and legislative requirements.
- Respond as a healthcare professional to emergency situations in compliance with established protocols.
- Use nursing expertise to assess and provide primary healthcare, education, and counseling to employees as a healthcare professional.
- Perform job-related medical examinations and provide preventive education to employees exposed to products or physical constraints in the workplace to ensure a safe working environment.
- Interpret and communicate examination results and coordinate or support appropriate follow-up in collaboration with the occupational physician and hygienist as needed.
- Communicate and explain monitoring results to employees while maintaining confidentiality.
- Initiate administrative actions, documentation, reports/forms, follow-ups, and communications required for effective departmental management.
- Assess health needs to offer appropriate internal or external services, such as external clinics, occupational physicians, the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), physiotherapy, etc., based on employee needs.
- Provide guidance to employees on safe work practices to reduce exposure and promote health and well-being.
- Participate in committees or projects as required related to health promotion and contribute to the development of health and wellness strategies or value-added initiatives for the organization.
- Comply with established protocols and practices, medical directives, and company standard work.
- Respect principles and guidelines related to best practices in confidentiality in accordance with company privacy policies, legislation, and the OIIQ.
- Actively participate in medical team meetings.
- Disability / Stay at Work / Return to Work
- During disability periods, the nurse acts as a return-to-work coordinator and facilitator. Supports the employee through the various stages of disability, from opening the claim with the insurer, during the work absence by facilitating access to specialized resources, through to a full and sustainable return to work.
- Develop a trusting relationship with employees on disability in order to optimize the recovery period of functional capacities for an early, safe, and sustainable return to work.
- Work in partnership with the various stakeholders involved in return-to-work or stay-at-work processes while maintaining the confidentiality of the medical condition.
- Identify and clarify requests for temporary restrictions, limitations, or accommodations required to facilitate return-to-work or stay-at-work plans.
- Work in partnership with managers and HR to identify factors that facilitate return to work or continued employment
This position is part of a French-speaking work environment, it requires a very good knowledge of English to read and understand, on a daily basis, documentation and technical terms that may emanate from international organizations, as well as to write and communicate in English with customers, suppliers or international colleagues.
What do you need to be successful?
Must-haves
- DEC or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing Sciences
- Active member of the OIIQ
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in varied medical care for the adult population and/or experience in occupational health
- French and English (spoken and written), excellent proficiency required for Canadian mandates
Required experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in varied medical care for the adult population and/or occupational health experience
- Competence in all aspects of nursing practice, including knowledge of anatomy and risk management
- High level of analytical and administrative work capacity
- Adaptability, including time management for multiple tasks with varying levels of priority and deadlines, and flexibility to ensure continuity of services
Assets
- University studies in Occupational Health and Safety, Disability Management, or Rehabilitation would be a significant asset
- Experience and training in travel health
- Experience and training in triage
