The Boeing Company is looking for an Instrumentation Technician to join our team in Tukwila, WA. Employees work from blueprints, schematics, technical manuals and bulletins, National Bureau of Standards, manufacturers’ specifications, oral and written instructions. You will be installing instrumentation, primarily strain gauges and thermocouples on all models of Boeing aircraft civilian, military and space.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Receive work assignment from team leader or supervisor and obtain necessary materials and equipment

  • Obtain appropriate engineering drawings and test documents, as required, for assignment if drawings, sketches, and documents are not with work assignment

  • Fabricate wire or fiber optic bundles used to connect various types of test and computer equipment together or test sensing equipment used to monitor and measure, for the purpose of collecting and storing data during test

  • Set up and perform qualification test, bench test, or automatic test as required per work assignment, test document, test equipment manuals, and/or engineering instructions

  • Install fiber optic strain gages, thermocouples, accelerometers, and strain gages by soldering, bonding, spot welding, or using mechanical fastening devices

  • Use a scissor or boom lift to access areas for instrumentation installation this work is performed both inside hangars and outside on airfields

  • Perform modification of test equipment to meet engineering configuration, as required

  • Select proper hand, power, and/or bench tools needed to perform required operation, such as screwdrivers, pliers, torque wrenches, crimpers, cable tools, band saw, drill press, and sander, as required

  • Use shop tools and any test equipment required to complete work assignment

  • Write tie-ins, and maintain records such as work log for areas/equipment as required

  • Devise and/or build shop aids and work around methods as necessary to test/troubleshoot systems

  • Handle and protect components and assemblies such as static sensitive equipment in accordance with shop procedures and drawing requirements

  • Handle and dispose of hazardous materials (ketone, naphtha, alcohol, epoxy, acids) in approved manner (in accordance with Safety Data Sheets) using personal protective equipment as required

  • Pack electronic equipment for travel as required per drawing and Boeing applicable specifications

  • Check work after completion of each operation to be sure job is per drawing or other instructions

  • Put completed job or reworked job up for inspection as required

  • Contact team leader/supervisor/engineer/planner when assistance is needed (e.g. if there is questions about drawings or paperwork, if drawings and paperwork do not match, or when any other problem arises)

  • Maintain personal and tool certifications, as required

  • Comply with applicable tool control policies

  • Effectively accomplishing the tasks, duties and responsibilities of this job requires at least these attributes

  • Ability to use precision measuring tools and test equipment and interpret results

  • Knowledge of routing, clamping, tying, connecting and terminating wires and/or wire bundles in electrical systems and assemblies, per the appropriate electrical codes

  • Knowledge of aircraft electrical and mechanical systems

  • Ability to calculate and apply advanced mathematics

  • Know and interpret data from a coordinate system to identify multiple axis and dimensional references (3-D)

  • Ability to set up and operate floor mounted hydraulic and/or mechanical operated equipment.

  • Ability to demonstrate entry level competency in operation of PIT (Power Industrial Trucks), in a safe manner as required

  • Ability to safely operate various types of hand tools and/or hand-held power tools as required.

  • Effectively communicate information

  • Knowledge of basic electricity and electrical systems

  • Operate various types of test equipment, perform testing and interpret results, as required

  • Knowledge of proper use, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials/chemicals, oils, coolants, and lubricants per government regulations and Boeing procedures

  • Metals (aluminum, brass, iron, Monel, nickel, steel, Plastics (acrylic, fiberglass, graphite, resins, KE, Sealants (latex, polysulfide, silicon), Solvents (acetone, turpentine, MEK, MPK, Isopropho), Adhesives (epoxy, acrylonitrile, organic rubber)


Occasional (1-3 Hrs.)

  • Alkalis (acid neutralizers, strong detergents), Liquid Coatings (etching mask, lacquer, penetrant-d), Acids (boric, muriatic, nitric, hydrochloric)

The following Environmental Conditions may be requirements of this job:

Continuous (6-8 Hrs.)

  • Noise (constant or intermittent sounds or pitch)


Frequent (3-6 Hrs.)

  • Nonionizing Radiation (sub-radio frequency, radio, Elevated Platforms), wings, lifts, cranes, ladders, Extreme Heat (ovens and furnaces)


Occasional (1-3 Hrs.)

  • Atmospheric Conditions (fumes, noxious odors, dust, Confined Spaces, Welding Equipment), Arc/Cutting, Flux-Cored, Gas-Me

This position is expected to be 100 onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet export control compliance requirements. To meet export control compliance requirements, a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15 is required.  “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee. 

                                                                                                                                       

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • 1+ year experience reading and interpreting wire harness diagrams and installation schematics

  • 1+ year experience in electrical (wire shop) fabrication and required processes

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 3+ years of strain gaging experience

  • 3+ years of experience in Aircraft Electrical systems

  • Certifications in: Electrical (Crimping, Bond and Ground), Mechanical (Fork lift, Hand truck, Pressure/vacuum), Safety (Electrical, Egress, Explosives)
