Summary This position is accountable for the evaluation of the microstructural quality of the company product as well as for the leadership of the Metallographic Laboratory in providing sample preparation, interpretation, and generation of data as well the maintenance of accurate records. Accountable for the proper testing and certification of the majority of bar and billet produced (approximately $300,000,000 sales value) and a department operating budget of approximately $300,000. Personnel Supervised: Metallographic Technicians Schedule product testing to comply with “on time” delivery requirements. Maintain the equipment maintenance and calibration requirements. Support the internal testing requirements. Interact internally with Production Control, Sales, Maintenance and Mechanical Test or Spectrographic Departments. Essential Functions Schedule product testing to comply with “on time” delivery requirements. Interact internally with Production Control, Sales, Maintenance and Metallurgy Departments. Interact with External Maintenance and Service Vendors. 1. Provide microstructure interpretation and consultation to company personnel. Preserve and reinforce company confidence level in the lab output by maintaining existing standards of accuracy and precision workmanship. Prepare new lab standards for various quality requirements, as they become necessary. Investigate customer problems and advise on their solution. Interface with Production Control and Certification departments for timely flow of material. Plan for the laboratory’s requirements in future company business. 2. Institute training programs for new employees. Instruct technicians in correct use and care of equipment, how to work accurately and efficiently, safety requirements and problems. Spot check metallographic ratings to ensure high levels of accuracy and consistency. Perform follow up training sessions at frequent intervals to keep all skills at peak performance. Periodically review technician’s job performance with them. 3. Investigate and acquire equipment to improve the lab’s performance. Arrange periodic maintenance for lab equipment. Maintain adequate stocks of operating supplies. 4. Perform verification rating on microscopes and microhardness tester. Prepare required photomicrographs. Generate resample requests and rejected product to the Internal Review Request (IRR) forms to clear rejectable product conditions. Maintain current specification files and requirements of customers. Work with Quality Systems to keep electronic data system updated and useful to other departments. 5. Coordinate the technicians in sample preparation, performing routine microstructural evaluation, disposition of samples according to established quality standards without delay. Perform the tasks of recording data, maintaining specimen morgues, report files, sample logs and photomicrographs. Ensure the cleaning and repair of equipment is current, complete general housekeeping tasks, microhardness testing or making photomicrographs standards. 6. Develop, publish and control individual laboratory procedures ensuring the new or revised documentation is communicated and understood via planned training schedules. 7. Provide resources to include training, mentoring and/or leadership activities to promote the advancement of personnel and/or departmental goals. 8. Promote continuous improvement and efficient time management metrics to daily, weekly and monthly milestones. Provide support and/or assistance to manager the target requirements. 9. Provide backup and/or support contingency programs during the planned and/or unplanned absenteeism of the department personnel. 10. All laboratory personnel who manage, perform work and verify work affecting the quality have the authority to and responsibility for maintaining the quality system within their areas of responsibility. They shall initiate action to prevent nonconformance with the quality system and shall recommend or provide corrective actions as required. They are responsible for the control of the analysis, inspection, calibration and/or testing including nonconforming material until the nonconformance has been corrected. 11. Qualifications Education and Experience Minimum B.S. in Materials/Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science. Two years of experience in metallography lab preferred. .Special Skills The incumbent and staff personnel provide a full range of laboratory services required for processing the company products from the initial raw material analysis through primary product melting then ultimately through chemical, metallographic and mechanical test evaluation for final product certification.
