The Meteorologist invests in the future of Southwests People in their work providing forecasting expertise for decision support and services in the Network Operations Control (NOC). The NOC is Southwests world-class operations center that functions as the Heart of major operational decisions and coordination, and the NOC has representation from every operational group within the Company. This role will work collaboratively with Leaders and Teams throughout the NOC to assist with immediate and proactive operational planning and decision-making with a focus on the Customer Journey and operational integrity. The Meteorologist is excited to bring their experience and detail-oriented thinking to the small Meteorology Team, which is integral to Southwests operation. Theyll have the opportunity to drive the future of Southwest Airlines.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver operational forecast content consistently and accurately within rigid time constraint.

  • Develop knowledge of airspace, air traffic control programs affecting the airline&xfffd;s operation.

  • Actively collaborate with other meteorologists on weather issues particularly in the 0-48 hour time frame. Specific focus on forecast trends through 24 hours.

  • Generate meteorological based narratives, forecast discussions and weather alerts for disruptive weather events within the 0-24 hour forecast as weather conditions dictate.

  • Continuously monitoring real-time weather conditions and updating forecast products

  • Provide scheduled and unscheduled briefings to a variety of Customers within the Southwest Airlines organization. Verbal and written briefings occur multiple times per day.

  • Producing products to communicate risk of weather impacts at Southwest Airlines airports and other locations. This includes: Must be able to quickly respond to weather related operational requests and be able to identify, prioritize, and communicate information regarding weather or atmospheric conditions that affect the safety and/or efficiency of airline operations.

  • Must practice safety conscious behaviors in all operational processes and procedures.

  • Provides friendly service to and maintains positive relationships with all Internal and External Customers

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to support a 24x7 department by working rotating shifts (early morning, afternoon/evenings and midnight shifts), most weekends, holidays and have rotating days off

  • Ability to work some extended hours and overtime shifts

  • Ability to work well with other as part of a Team, professionally interact with other departments, labor groups, and the public; and have the flexibility to perform well under pressure

  • Ability to use computer software to obtain, create disseminate weather data

  • Ability to interpret weather events and forecast to support the tactical and strategic concerns of the center

  • Knowledgeable of weather theory and weather products produced by the US Government or any contractor used by SWA

  • Ability to follow verbal and written guidance

  • Ability to take initiative and work independently

  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact in an operational team environment

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information

  • Ability to analyze problems and make sound decisions

  • Skilled in typing and/or using a computer keyboard with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job

  • Ability to master current and emergent PC software packages including Windows applications

  • Skilled in organization, detail and project work

  • Ability to work under tight time constraints to accomplish assignments and projects

  • Skilled in problem-solving

  • Ability to work multiple concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Skilled in explaining technical information to various audiences

  • Proficiency in forecast process within an operational forecasting environment.

  • Familiarity with Airline Operations

  • Proficiency in Windows applications and general PC knowledge

  • Education
    • High school diploma or GED
    • Bachelor&39;s degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related science from an accredited college or university, OR a combination of training and experience that has led to "qualification" as an aviation forecaster by the NWS or a U.S. or NATO military authority
  • Experience
    • Entry level experience in operational weather forecasting with civilian/commercial or military experience, with understanding in aviation industry weather impacts
  • Licensing/Certification
  • Physical Abilities
    • Ability to perform work duties from [limited space work station/desk/office area] for extended periods of time
    • Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
    • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job
  • Other Qualifications
    • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
    • Must be at least 18 years of age
    • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines

Pay & Benefits:

Pay of $6,350.00 per month*, with the opportunity for future increase per applicable collective bargaining agreement wage scale. Opportunities for overtime and shift premiums.
