Being part of Air Canada is to become part of an iconic Canadian symbol, recently ranked the best Airline in North America. Let your career take flight by joining our diverse and vibrant team at the leading edge of passenger aviation. As a Research Scientist at Air Canada, you will develop analytical approaches using optimization, data science, simulation, mathematics, statistics, and business knowledge to build scalable data driven products. We are seeking an Operations Research Scientist to build solvable and scalable optimization models, enabling smarter decisions across our products and services.
You will join the Data Science & AI Team, a central group within Air Canada’s IT organization, building machine learning and optimization solutions for internal business units such as Revenue Management, Network Planning, Operations, Maintenance, and Cargo but also customer facing solution. Collaboration with both technical and non-technical stakeholders is essential as you deliver production-grade applications. All initiatives follow an agile methodology, with 2-to-3-week sprints and incremental releases leading to the final production deployment. This approach fosters continuous improvement, adaptability, and close alignment with business needs.Responsibilities:
Use optimization techniques to contribute to formulating and solving business problems.Apply decomposition methods as needed to solve very large-scale optimization models.Develop and implement scalable quantitative mathematical models and collaborate with engineers to deploy these models.Perform quantitative, economic, and numerical analysis of the performance of these systems to find both exact and heuristic solution strategies for optimization problems.Apply mathematical optimization techniques, including Linear Programming, Integer Programming, Dynamic Programming, Network Optimization algorithms to contribute in designing exact or heuristic solution methodologies for in-house decision support tools and software.Apply Machine Learning and regression techniques to tackle predictive modeling problems.Develop software prototypes to verify and validate the devised solutions methodologies.Investigate the conflict behind infeasible datasets and add appropriate handling to resolve such infeasibilities.Perform quality assessments of analytical solutions, particularly simulation and optimization models.Maintain clear documentation of methodologies, code, and project outcomes for reproducibility.Stay updated with the latest advancements in operations research, data science, machine learning, and AI technologies.
QualificationsMaster’s or PhD in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Quantitative Methods, or a closely related field, or equivalent relevant experience.3 to 5 years of professional experience applying operations research techniques to deliver measurable improvements in business outcomes (e.g., increased operational efficiency, cost reduction, enhanced decision-making).Proficiency with optimization tools and solvers, including commercial (Cplex, Gurobi, Fico Xpress) or open-source (Coin-OR, SCIP) platforms.Strong background in optimization techniques to solve Mixed Integer Programming (MIP), Quadratic Programming (QP), or Non-Linear Programming (NLP). Proficient in Python and SQLExperience in applying Operations Research, advanced analytical and/or statistical methods to solve business problems.Experience with fast prototyping.Familiarity with Network Optimization and scheduling problems.Familiarity with Machine Learning models and algorithms.Demonstrate punctuality and dependability to support overall team success in a fast-paced environment.
