Boeing has an exciting opportunity, through our IAM/Boeing Joint Apprenticeship Program, for Tool & Die Maker Apprenticeship in the Puget Sound region in Washington State!

This 5-year apprenticeship is 10,000 hours in length (9,200 on-the-job hours and 800 school hours) and includes paid on-the-job training and unpaid classroom education. The first 20 of the on-the-job training is a probationary period. Apprentices attend school for a minimum 144 unpaid hours per school year (four hours each week) at the South Seattle College Georgetown Apprenticeship and Education Center. Apprentice wages are defined in Article 17 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement with International Association of Machinists District 751 and The Boeing Company. Apprentices advance one wage progression step for every 1000 apprenticeship on the job training hours until completion. Graduates are placed in the target job at the maximum rate and receive a Journey-worker Certificate and Card - recognized worldwide.

Applicants should have a strong willingness and aptitude for learning, problem solving, and judgement, as well as a mindset for continuous improvement.

Apprentices will learn the following tasks to become proficient as a Journey level graduate of the program:

  • Machine, plan, layout, fabricate, make, assemble, maintain and repair tools, dies, and molds.

  • Tools and/or dies are constructed of metals, plastics and composite materials.

  • The Tool and Die Maker apprentice, in addition to conventional and NC machine operation training, also includes the use of precision measuring tools, involving coordinated tolerances in more than one working plane and/or involving obtuse, acute or right-angle construction; with dies such as push-through, blanking, piercing, cut-off, forming, joggle, deep, and compound dies, numerical machine programming.

  • Assembly of tools and/or dies may include the creation and repair of pneumatics, hydraulic plumbing, and performing functional checks, testing and wind tunnel maintenance.

Applicant Eligibility:

  • must be at least 18 years of age;

  • must be eligible for hire or rehire at Boeing;

  • must never have been enrolled in or completed an IAM/Boeing Joint Apprenticeship program;

  • must have a GED or a high school diploma; and

  • must have US person status as defined by Boeing.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee

Basic qualifications/requirements

  • Understanding of intermediate algebra

  • Ability to understand and express yourself in English

  • Basic Blueprint Reading

  • Basic Precision Measuring Tools

  • Basic Milling Machine operation

  • Basic Lathe operation

Math and English requirements to be verified by assessment or equivalent course completion in Intermediate Algebra or better, taken within the last 5 years and English 90 or better. 

All assessments and/or courses must be completed prior to submitting your application.  Assessments taken for English and/or math are required to show both the assessment score and the course placement results (course number and course title) for that score. 

Documentation for all course completions, test challenges, certificate and/or degree programs must be provided at time of application.  

Qualification of Blueprint Reading, Precision Measuring Tools, Basic Milling Machine operation and Basic Lathe operation can be met by one of the two ways listed below and verified via resume, work history and transcripts.

Vocational courses

  • Basic Blueprint Reading or equivalent

  • Basic Precision Measuring Tools or equivalent

  • Milling Machine (a course minimum of 80 hours, or 5 or more credits)

  • Lathe (a course minimum of 80 hours, or 5 or more credits)

1-year work experience in similar field below

  • Boring Mills (Vertical, Horizontal)

  • Computer Numerical Control

  • Drills (Radial, Press, NC)

  • Grinding (Internal, External, Surface, Thread

  • Heat Treat

  • Jig Bore, Jig Grinder

  • Lathes (Conventional, NC, CNC, Turret)

  • Layout (Conventional, CMM)

  • Mills (Conventional, NC, CNC, Profile)

  • Tool Grind

  • Trade Related Bench Work

This position is expected to be 100 onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility.

This is an hourly position governed by the IAM Collective Bargaining agreement.
